Another one bites the dust.............

MFA Third Division

Saturday, 25 January 2014 - Sirens Stadium - 4:15pm

Sirens FC vs Sta Lucija FC:   4 - 2

With wind in their sails, Sirens started on the offensive and created the first occasion six minutes from the start.  Though the ball hit the back of the net, the goal was not validated as Galea’s position was adjudicated off side.  Santa Lucija defended well and operated on counter attacks.  On such an occasion on the 17th minute, Mohammed Senussi put the hosts ahead.  Receiving the ball close to the box, Senussi wizzed past a defender before putting the ball behind Spiteri.  A fine goal indeed.  Sirens could have settled the matter two minutes later by Captain Kristian Galea did not connect with an incisive pass.  On the 22nd George Falzon missed the target from a freekick and three minutes later, Lee Joe Schembri made Santa Lucia’s keeper show his mettle.  On the 26th Giovanni Galea went close from a free kick with Senussi doing the same for the yellows.  The Whites drew level on the 32nd when Marlon Vella slotted the ball past Vella after receiving from a corner kick.  On the 35th Ryan Theuma, who was returning for Sirens after a suspension, had to leave the pitch due to an injury.  We wish a speedy recovery to Ryan who is an important part of the team.  On the 40th Goncalves missed an easy chance by sending sky high and Senussi replied by a personal action for Santa Lucija.  On the 45th Kristian Galea shot off target but the goal was in the air.  Hardly a minute in injury time Marlon Vella put Sirens ahead with a beautiful calibrated shot.

Notwithstanding that they played against the wind, Sirens dominated the proceedings during the second half.  On the 47th Goncalves saw a loosely marked Giovanni Galea who found no difficulty in placing the ball at the back of the net after receiving a precise pass.  Now leading 3-1, Sirens were awarded a penalty on the 55th, with Giovanni Galea stepping up to transform and add another goal to the tally.  Santa Lucija’s chances were few and far in between.  On the other hand Sirens had ample chances to raise the score.  Goncalves, Falzon Schembri Camilleri and Galea tried their luck but none of them found the target.  On the 80th minute Santa Lucija’s best player, Mohammed Sanussi, was substituted.  Appreciating his technical skills Sirens supporters applauded him on his way out of the pitch.  Sanussi reciprocated showing his appreciation.  Sanussi is highly talented and is a player to watch out for.  On the 90th Santa Lucija drew one back when an attempt from free kick reached its target.

With the final whistle, of this match dominated by strong winds, Sirens FC became the only unbeaten team in all divisions.  This is an important feat but promotion is not yet secured and Swieqi United are still trailing four points behind.  This was another important step in the right direction.   Keep it up
