Mgarr United FC vs Sirens FC; 2 - 2
Sirens FC dropped two important points in the derby against Mgarr United. The Greens presented a solid wall which the Blues found very hard to penetrate. It was Lee Joe Schembri who put Sirens ahead on the 3rd minute with an incisive shot that gave the Mgarr keeper no chance. This was a rare concession by the United rear guard. Jake Schembri had to intervene on the 11th to safeguard the lead, when Mgarr tried their best on one of their frequent counter attacks. On the 19th minute United drew level when Licari found the net after receiving the ball from a corner kick. On the 25th Sirens could have taken the lead again but Goncalves's cross dissected the box without finding anyone to take the chance. For the first time during this league campaign Sirens went down to the opponents. This happened on the 26th when Licari, once again, found the net by heading in a cross from a corner. It is to note that Mgarr were very precise from corners as they managed to convert two out of three. On the 36th Giovanni Galea sent the ball high. On the 38th Sirens were awarded a freekick. George Falzon supplied the perfect pass to Daniel Sant who put the ball past Mgarr keeper to make the score 2-2. On the 45th Jake Schembri was once again instrumental to preserve the status quo.
During the second half, Sirens tried hard to take the lead but a very tough Mgarr side, bad refereeing and a spell of bad luck, made sure that the song remained the same. On the 51th George Falzon saw his attempt from free kick saved. An attempt by Lee Joe Schembri fro m as similar occasion went wide. On the 62nd Schembri came close again but United's keeper diverted in corner. On the 69th Philip Camilleri tried his luck but his effort failed to materialize. On the 71st the Referee chose to ignore a blatant hands ball in the Mgarr box. The same happened on the 77th. Sirens increased the pressure during the last 15 minutes but attempts by Giovanni Galea, Ryan Sciberras and Geroge Falzon did not leave the desired outcome. The cherry on the cake was the ball dashing on the post on the 92nd.
It was not to be. Now the lead on second placed Swieqi United is down to two points. That is why I was so infuriated when we dropped two precious points against Ta Xbiex. We must work hard and try to be more precise and incisive on similar occasions because Mgarr will not be the only defensive team that we play against. Good luck for the next game.
